Cream Area – Covers the far eastern corner of Crete from Mochlos to just before Makrigialos on the South Coast
This area, more remote, and often described as “forgotten”, is not so dependent on tourism, remaining self sufficient, with a pleasant, friendly populace. There are numerous villages on the coastal road towards Sitia, all traditionally friendly, with kafenions, serving simple Cretan fare with a smile. The town of Sitia does not have the old traditional appearance of other coastal towns in Crete, but does have some old monuments, remnants of the Turkish and Venetian occupation. A large and lovely harbour, with resident pelican, lined with restaurants and cafeterias that buzz with the vibrant local life. With long, sandy, deserted beaches to the East side of town. Slightly less mountainous, but nonetheless spectacular, this area promises growth with the expansion of the Sitia airport.
