Yellow Area covers the South part of Heraklion, from Agioi Deka to East Pirgos, down to Lendas and west to Kokkinos Pirgos/Tympaki.

Charming quiet villages both inland and the southern coast give nice view of rural life on Crete. It is full of places to discover. The south of Heraklion is very different from the north coast: the mountains fall steeply into the Mediterranean sea, so there are no roads along the coasts to spoil the coastline. The nature is wilder, the villages are small and further apart than in the north.

In the south you can find millions of beaches which are full of energy and beauty. Kommos, Kali Limenes, Matala with the caves in the rocks, Kalamaki, Agiofarango, Diskos/Lendas, and many others. The access from the north towards the south is very good, a new National Road has been built recently. From Heraklion airport it is approximately 1.5 hour to drive towards the South. Further inland off the main route you will find the beautiful village of Zaros with its lake and gorge nearby.

The area is popular for agriculture. Mires is a busy local market town. It has a large market every Saturday and is located at the centre of the fertile Messara valley, an area steeped in history and really at the heart of Crete. The Messara has been fought over and cherished for thousands of years, and still today boasts miles and miles of olives groves, vines, mandarins, lemons, greenhouses and just about every vegetable you could think of. This is what makes the trip here worth while, to see the abundance and select for yourself from the cornucopia on offer. On the outskirts of Mires town are the ruin of the ancient Minoan palace of Phaistos and the Roman ruin of Gortys.
