Achladia

The village of Ahladia (meaning Pear, so named from a tree that once flourished in the village square) is set on a gently rising fertile plateau 8 km from the north coast town of Sitia on a picturesque road that runs through a splendid pass to the village of Stavrohori and the south coast. It is about 250 metres above sea level and enjoys many lovely sea views across the undulating valley. The open nature of this village means it has always been well inhabited and many small but important houses have been renovated and preserved keeping the traditional feel of the area. There is a selection of cafenions and tavernas that serves a dish called Psito, roast lamb and potatoes with Lemon and Olive oil and flavoured with local herbs, cooked slowly sealed in a wood burning clay oven; a delicacy which attracts many residents from Sitia at the weekends. The old stone school house has been renovated and clay ovens built around the square and these are used for the village festival in August which attracts a very large gathering and for other smaller events during the year.

On the outskirts of the village at Platiskinos there is a very ornate tomb from the post Minoan era with a round chamber of over four metres high, complete with a door at the back so that the deceased could communicate with the world of the living. There are also the remains of a Minoan Villa nearby
