Akoumia is a sizable village about 8km south of Spili and 12km from Ag. Galini. It is nestled into the mountainside and has views across to Mount Kedros. In the centre is a large platia with a very old plane tree that provides shade during the summer months, for the tables and chairs that spill from the several cafes and tavernas that surround the square. A short drive will bring you to the unspoilt beaches of the south coast including Triopetra and Akoumia. It is well located for exploring the island and is about equal distance from both Hania and Heraklion airports which are approximately 1½ hours drive.
Set on the coast in the Southern Rethimno region between Spili and Agia Galini, the area still retains the magnificent beauty and character of Crete. The landscape of rolling mountains and valleys leading down to the Libyan Sea is overlooked by tiny mountain villages and dotted with these traditional stone dwellings. This area is ideal for those who enjoy the natural beauty and habitat of Crete. The coast is lined with secluded beaches and coves, scattered with the occasional taverna offering traditional Cretan cuisine.
