Galatas is a sought after location for local and foreign buyers. It is a village with traditional character and all amenities about 4 km west of Hania town and 1-2 km from the sandy beaches. There are a number of tavernas and restaurants (even a Turkish one!), small shops and lately also a super market. The village is the capital of the municipality of Nea Kydonia, and therefore the town hall and the police station as well as an elementary school are located here. From most spots there are panoramic views of the sea and the White Mountains.
The village is well known also to Veterans from the Second World War, every year celebrations are held in remembrance of the Battle of Crete in 1941, and visitors from all over the world attend. Paratroopers from New Zealand had landed just outside of Galatas to help the local population against the German invasion.
