The beautiful town of Hania has kept its local and authentic colours, despite growing tourism. It is considered one of the loveliest towns of Greece, becoming increasingly popular to live and holiday in. Extremely picturesque and charming keeping many of it's historical elegance. Full of impressive, beautiful and interesting buildings as well as narrow stone-paved alleyways which are giving a mystical and charming character to the whole town.
In 1971 Chania lost its status of capital of Crete and was replaced by Heraklion.
