Heraklion is the capital of Crete and is a bustling, busy town with shops, museums, tavernas and kafenions. It is located on the Northern coast, East of Rethimno. Although the city itself is not particularly pretty in some places architecturally the people are extremely friendly and helpful and there are some attractive suburbs on the outskirts of the town. There are also many buildings that have been preserved creating a pleasant atmosphere which brings back the memory of the towns past. It is only 10 minutes by frequent bus service to the airport. There is an interesting harbour, fantastic Saturday morning market, and frequent ferries arrive from all parts of the Mediterranean.
