Located about 60 km away from Hania on the road leading south towards Paleohora, Kantanos is the capital of the Province of Selinou. It was erected on the site of ancient Kantanos (built by the Dorians in 1049 AD). Today, Kantanos is a working village with a number of shops and excellent restaurants. Some remarkable churches have been preserved from the Byzantine Period. During WW II, the villagers killed many Nazi Germans and the later in reprisal destroyed the village completely. It placed a sign that is still preserved, and says: "The village Kantanos was here. It was destroyed in reprisal to the assassination of 25 Germans". The town was built all over again after the end of the war.
