A quiet seaside village. It is 16 km from Hania with frequent bus connections. Some bars and a discotheque at the western end of Maleme The beach is made of fine pebbles and is far less crowded than the beaches of Gerani, Agia Marina and Platanias.
Before the Second World War this village was the site of the Hania airport, where in 1941 the villagers took part in the "Battle of Crete" trying to keep parachutists from invading the island. There is easy access to the Kafkales site, where you can see the ruins of a hatched grave dating from the later minoan period, as well as the German Cemetary.
