Mirtia is quite a large traditional village at an altitude of 360 metres with narrow paved streets about 14 kilometres South East of Heraklion. There are tavernas, kafeneons, supermarkets and a post office. There is a folk museum in the main square. A very famous Greek writer lived in this village called Nikos Kazantzakis and in the square is a museum in his honour. This is a peaceful village.
