Platanias is the largest tourist resort in western Crete, built right on the long sandy beach approx. 15 km west of Hania town. The village owns its name to the many plane trees (“platania” in Greek) standing on the shore of the river Platanias on the mouth of which the village is located.
There is a large choice of restaurants and tavernas, shopping facilities, discos and bars as well as a regular bus service to Hania. Whereas the buildings along the coast are fairly new, there is a picturesque old village on the hill above, with breathtaking views of the sea and the island of Thodorou. There is a small harbour with mooring facilities but the availability is very restricted.
