Spilli Area (Kastellos)
Spili is a popular mountain town famous for its fountain of 26 lion heads from which water gushes all year round. During the summer months the main road through the town is lined with shops selling traditional lace and carpets. The old part of the town is set back from the main road on the hillside, and has a maze of small pretty alleyways overhung with bougainvillaea and vines. It has plenty of shops, Tavernas and cafes, plus an excellent health centre and bank with ATM. Spili is just 22km from Rethymno and there is a regular bus service north and south to Ag Galini and Plakias. Busy all year round, it is an ideal location from which to explore the whole island and is well situated to provide access to any number of beaches and coves along the south coast. There is a high school in the village, serving the surrounding area.
