Historical fortified island and now a museum, was once inhabited by the Venetians and then the Turkish. For a short period of its later history Spinalonga was a leper colony. After extensive work the impressive Venetian fortifications have been restored and much of the Turkish architecture renovated. It can be visited by boat from Plaka or Elounda The whole of the larger island of Spinalonga known as Kolokithia is nature reserve and so will never be built on.
